Here is an empty gallery without any objects or loans. Hara Clark and studio HB were commissioned to create an exhibition at the NRM in York called Trans-Siberian: The World’s Longest Railway, where the engineering, social and cultural stories of the world’s longest railway line
The Science Museum Group rightly so decided not to go ahead with the exhibition in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and we stand united in opposition to this conflict and in support of all those impacted by Russia's invasion.
We shot the exhibition design as a record of how odd the gallery looks without having these objects to punctuate the design and weave the narrative-bringing the space to life. The lighting on either wall gave the impression of being on a moving train-the landscape on either side of autumnal birch trees and snow.
Our central structure-rather like a bridge was inspired by the photography of Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky who’s many photographs from 1909-1915 of railroad bridges, locomotives, barges, steamers and canals reflect the importance of the transportation system.
